Business Opportunity

Brain tumors are among the deadliest cancers, and the primary goal of treatment is to slow tumor growth. Despite decades of research, only about half of patients respond to treatment, and survival outcomes have barely improved. This is partly due to a one-size-fits-all approach that overlooks disease heterogeneity and the timing of diagnosis. A major challenge is the lack of tools for early assessment of treatment response, as tumors are often small, asymptomatic, and undetectable in their early stages. Currently, it can take up to a year of follow-ups to confirm treatment efficacy, by which time the tumor may have developed resistance or metastasized, leaving patients with minimal time and options. A new diagnostic paradigm is urgently needed to detect tumor growth before the cancer becomes clinically diagnosable.
We will provide a fully automatic decision-support system for early detection of brain-tumor growth and treatment response, starting with meningiomas. The system is designed to expand to other brain pathologies, including gliomas, metastases, and several non-cancer brain lesions, offering large market prospects. A substantial commercial value can be realized through a new company introducing multiple software solutions for. We are now validating clinical value with clinicians, and Inven2 seeks partners for co-development.

Technology Description

Leading scientists at Oslo University Hospital have developed a tool, CHRONOS, that can reveal tumor growth up to half a year before it becomes available by traditional means. CHRONOS quantifies and outlines pathology induced by structural changes based on magnetic resonance imaging, advanced mathematical models and machine learning. The working prototype is about to be validated directly in the clinical workflow. The main advantages of the technology will be realized through:

  • Personalized medicine: Replacing current one-size-fits-all analyses with tailor-made assessments
  • Improved performance: Identifying disease progression much earlier than current practice
  • Increased robustness: Replacing user-dependent radiographic readings, providing unbiased, data-driven, and repeatable results
  • Reduced analysis time: Replacing laborious radiographic interpretations; providing response-assessment reports within minutes after an MRI exam
